When to use the future tense?

When do you use the future tense in Spanish? For example, in the sentence,

Esperamos que él se quede.

why is the present tense of "quedarse" used instead of the future, as it is in the english translation (we hope that he will stay)?

Thank you!

As opposed to "We hope he stays"? :)

The present subjunctive tense was used, to be more exact.

There used to be a future subjunctive tense but the present subjunctive tense has replaced it.

The future indicative tense is used as in English (in the indicative mood). You'll need to recognize the difference in moods in order to get the tense right.

The 'ir + a + infinitivo' construct can also be used to form the future tense.
