I suppose this means there was't a soul, but in the context in which it was written, I don't believe it does? What does it mean?

I agree with Rusty. No hubo ni rastro del ladrón = There wasn't a trace of the thief.
On a side note, rastro also means slaughterhouse. |

Yes, it is. But it's more common: no quedó ni rastro.
