"Acá hubo una serie de manijas falsas para caldear los ánimos"

I'm thinking:

"Here they muddied the waters to fan the flames/wind them up"

I think manijas falsas would translate as there's been a series of false moves that fanned the flames but I would need more context to give you a definite answer.
