Lámpara

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 1, 2008

lámpara - feminine noun (la) - lamp, flashlight. Look up lámpara in the dictionary

Cuando se va la luz de noche y no puedo prender la lámpara junto a mi cama, necesito una lámpara de pilas para poder ver.
When the electricity goes out at night and I can't turn on the lamp next to my bed, I need a flashlight to see.

Instead of lámpara de pilas I would say linterna.

Los genios viven en lámparas maravillosas. Si alguna vez liberas a alguno, como le ocurrió a Saladino, te concederá tres deseos. ¿Has pensado ya tus tres deseos?

Why do you say Saladino instead of Aladdin (Aladino)?
And what are your three wishes? And by the way, who where you asking? David? The world in general?...
And a couple more things:
-A genie lives in a magic lamp
-Einstein was a genius
(my students often confuse these two)
And to finish with:
-the British word for flash light is torch, though sometimes you can say lamp.

The lamp of my dreams, whe I'ven't light in the night, and I put me sad, I don't like the darknees.

I love the light, the sun, the clouds. ect..

Do the British use torch for antorcha as well? Or do they have another word?

Alfonso August 03, 2008 02:26 AM

Yes, it was Aladino the character of the Las mil y una noches. Saladino was a real historical man, born in Tikrit (as Saddam Husein), who was an important emir of Egypt and Syria in the middle ages, and defender of the Islam.

Torch is used for antorcha as well, David.
