Hamaca

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 7, 2008

hamaca - feminine noun (la) - hammock. Look up hamaca in the dictionary

Laying down in a hammock is comfortable unless you fall out of it.

And how would you say deckchair in Spanish? I imagine it is hamaca too, but is there another word?... Aha! I just remembered myself. Tumbona?
Yo me lo digo todo...:D

Elaina August 07, 2008 08:15 AM

Is a lounge chair and a lawn chair the same thing?

Tumbona = lounge chair

Alfonso August 07, 2008 10:50 AM

BTW, hamaca is one of those precolombian words that came into Spanish.

Veo que has abandonado a los meros mortales en su categoría de humildes piedrecitas y te has subido a un plano superior. Very bohemian...:)

Sorry, I forgot to quote. I did mean you.
Was it the boss then?

I knew this would awake some envy feelings... And I'm proud of it. You, simple emerald, pearls, stones... JIA, JIA, JIA (read it as a really devilish laugh).

What colour do you get in English when envy eats your entreils?

We say: ponerse verde de envidia.

JIA, JIA, JIA...

Rusty August 07, 2008 11:30 AM

To be green with envy.

Alfonso August 07, 2008 11:37 AM

Thanks a lot, Rusty! What about the envy eats your entrails? Is this correct? In Spanish we say: la envidia / el odio te come las entrañas.

Rusty August 07, 2008 11:55 AM

Hmm. We say that rage (and envy) can eat us up inside. I guess that's about the same thing.

Alfonso August 07, 2008 11:59 AM

So, envy eats me up inside... Thanks! I said, la envidia te come las entrañas but it's also very common la envidia te corroe (por dentro / las entrañas).

poli August 07, 2008 01:19 PM

Once again cannibal-related subject matter rears its ugly head. I'm nearly sure there are not Hannibal Lectors here in the forum , but you could say, "he was eaten alive with jealously or hate or envy or greed "

I'm not jealous. Just curious.:?:

Poli, Elaina
I think you are confusing two different words:
egotístico: self-centred
egoísta: selfish
