Notes

I've consulted dictionaries but got nothing useful.

In high school, at uni etc. teachers very often give us notes/note, related to what is to be discussed in class, but when should we use NOTE/NOTES?

eg Does every one of you have the note/notes?

What's the difference between the singular and the plural form?

When the noun is used to mean a record or an outline of a speech (lesson), it is always used in the plural.

I can't go to class tomorrow. Will you take notes for me?

A brief record of something is called a note.

John, talking to Steve's roommate on the phone: Take a note. "Call John at 555-8765."
Steve's roommate, upon Steve's return: Hey! There's a note for you on the fridge. John wants you to call him.
