He is on an exchange

He is on an exchange

situation:

Peter is studying at UCL, but this term he is an exchange student studying in French Engineering Institute, so when his friends at UCL can't find him on campus, can they ask?:

-Is he on (an) exchange?

Other ways of expressing the same meaning?

-Is he on (an) exchange? (You don't need to include the indefinite article, but it isn't unheard of.)

I can't think of a more appropriate way to ask that question.
