Volante

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 27, 2008

volante - masculine noun (el) - steering wheel, flyer. Look up volante in the dictionary

Hay diferentes diseños de volante, pero casi todos son redondos.
There are different steering wheel designs, but almost all of them are round.

I use timón for steering wheel, but I've heard volante for steering wheel too. I've used volante for pamphlet or form that needs to be filled out like planilla. I hope I'm right about this.

"volante" in cars
"timón" in ships
.
"volante" can be a little form you must fill in some burocratic procediments.
In RAE has a lot of meanings
greetings :D

PD: Poli, your're still Saphire. Change it! how about "an american in New York"?

ElDanés August 27, 2008 10:02 AM

Maybe he wants to be a sapphire? :)

I like to blue stone, but I would be willing to personize my epithet. I just don't know how to. I'm afraid I'm having a poli moment.:o

I only use volante for one bureaucratic procedure: a doctor's referral. Are there any other common uses?

Volante of the cars, or like it can be a steering wheels, I use only the steering wheel of my car or like the gaming uses the steering wheels for example the Play Station, or Atari perhaps, in the life there're a lot of steering wheels in your home in the street or simply you do the way of a steering wheels with your own body.

My expression is very curious, because I said this can you do the way of a steering wheels with your body, I ask me it, How you'll can to do the way of a steering wheels with your body at least hey , a thing, this that I said you is with all the respect ok, then at least you be a person very fat then yes you can be a steering wheels here in my town the persons fats, we tell them Volantitos ijiji, it's very funny.

Rusty August 27, 2008 12:54 PM

More people favor flyer over flier, but both are accepted spellings.

Frequent Flyer Miles = Millas de Viajero Frecuente

CrOtALiTo August 27, 2008 05:36 PM

I think what the word user in Mexico for say volante to a piece of paper maned publicity is layout and not steering wheel.

At least in My contry there are a lot types of layouts as periodicals, magazine, ect. But never I've said the word steering wheel to a layout or publicity.

It's my own view point.

I was just checking, to see if by more people you meant most Americans or most English-speaking people, and my Oxford dictionary includes flier as a variation of flyer.

poli August 29, 2008 01:35 PM

Not me.
That word makes me think of a baby goat, a kid (even if the right word is cabritillo.
The seven little kids and the wolf (I just checked and it's the other way around: The wolf...)
Los siete cabritillos y el lobo
Kitsch or what?;)
