Polvo

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for September 4, 2008

polvo - masculine noun (el) - powder, dust. Look up polvo in the dictionary

Las carreteras de terrazería siempre producen mucho polvo.
Unpaved roads always produce a lot of dust.

Caution:
polvo as powder/desk is very common
"polvos de talco"
"trapos para limpiar el polvo"
"polvos de maquillaje"

or as to be exhausted "estoy hecho polvo"

but as slang, "echar un polvo" is "a quickie/to shag/to screw/to balll/to have it off". I don't know this kind of english words :o

greetings :D

Ajo en polvo, powdered garlic. I work in a restaurant and alot of the foods have sp/en labels. Several use "en polvo" to show that the contents are powdered.

What are you trying to say here, Crotalito?

Perhaps he's waxing biblical on us? Somos del polvo y al polvo regresaremos.

Interesting you should mention that. You can learn a fair amount of vocabulary just from packaging and labels. :)

That was my first thought, but then I doubted. Maybe he's trying to say estamos hechos polvo (we're beat). :?:

This got me into a really embarrasing situation during my first years in Spain...
I said to a workmate, trying to show off my very limited spanish at the time:showoff:(he was a guy, in case you´re wondering) "Cuando terminamos con esto vamos echar polvo el resto del día":eek::eek:
I was trying to say that by the time we were through with the workload we had, we would be very tired for the rest of the day..
Guys, you cannot imagine the look he gave me ...!
As he explained what I had said, I turned blue, then purple and finally red...:o:o:o
Well...., I learnt never to mix the two expressions up.

Apart from the biblical version, is somos polvos a different saying or is this just a literal translations?

CrOtALiTo September 05, 2008 12:00 PM

The phrase we are dust is very common between the society and the phrases into the scriptures of the bible and I know that exist more way to say we are dust but the easier is we are dust because it's truth we are made of dust and when we die finally will be dust.
