Polite letter writing

Are my sentences polite and do they befit the style that should be adopted by a student when he writes to a teacher?

Dear Prof L,

Thank you for nominating me leader of a mentor group. I appreciate it. But the problem I have is, I do not know those in my group very well, so I hope to hand over/shift the responsibility of so difficult a task to others, who would definitely be more competent than I am. I apologise for causing all the trouble. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Paul Auster

Your sentences are indeed polite. Using 'suit' would be better than 'befit'.

Surrender the responsibility
Hand over the responsibility
Turn over the responsibility
Abdicate the responsibility

There should not be a comma after 'others'.
