Alberca

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for September 12, 2008

alberca - feminine noun (la) - swimming pool. Look up alberca in the dictionary

Mucha gente nada en las albercas pero yo creo que el agua no está muy limpia.
A lot of people swim in swimming pools but I don't think the water is very clean.

Alberca is apparently only used in Mexico. I know this as la piscina.

In Spain, swimming pool is piscina.
Alberca is more like a water reservoir, for farming uses. Like a little artificial lake
Saludos :D

En Mexico se entiende tres palabras: alberca, balneario y piscina. La más usada es alberca, seguida por balneario y después piscina :). ¿Usan balneario en españa?

También en Mexico wading pool is chapoteadero. How do you say that in other areas?

Creo que se dice piscina para niños.
Some wading pools are not for kids (like the ones around a statue in the village square). Those are called estanques or fuentes.

Reflecting pond = estanque espejo
Reflecting pool = piscina espejo or espejo de agua

Jajajaja, all you commentaries about of the swimming pool are very fun, and about the other meaning called kiddie pool is more pretty and very cute.

In spain
piscina: swimming pool
alberca: water reservoir
balneario: health resort (in the beach or in the mountains, with water)
piscina para niños/piscina infantil: kiddie pool/paddling pool
Saludos :D

And now in Spain some people use spa (the English word for balneario).

Can I throw in one more?:

It's becoming more than common here in Spain to have a yacuzi (jacuzzi) at home, the word has not been accepted academically, but it entered the language via soap TV operas and sitcoms...

Jessica October 20, 2008 05:23 AM

oh yes most swimming pools that's outside it not clean at all. Full of dead bugs and leaves :yuck:
