Leave himself

-He could threaten to leave himself.

Is 'himself' just an intensifier without much meaning? Are the red words the same as 'leave' simply?

Yes, the whole reason for the word 'himself' is emphasis. Another way to phrase the statement is:
He himself could threaten to leave.

You can, of course, rephrase the statement with no added emphasis and, in that case, the answer to your second question is yes.
