¿Me podéis corregir?

The other day I was out my friend. We had gone for a drink then we looked round a few shops. She before she went she she "can you pick sam up for me? Its just I feel bad keep asking Sara ." I said " but now its not so cold you could bring the baby out and collect sam yourself. She said " I can't" it was obvious that she was trying to invent an excuse,/ trying to come up with a reason why she couldn't.

El otro dia estuve/estaba?? con una amiga mia. Habíamos tomado algo y luego dimos una vuelta por las tiendas. Antes de que se fuera me dijo "me puedes recojer a Sam es que me sabe mal siempre preguntandole a Sara." Yo dije " Pero ahora no hace tanto frio puedes sacar el bebe y recogerlo tu." Ella dijo " no puedo" fue/era?? obvio que estaba intentando inventar una escusa/ inventar una razon por la que no podia.
