Passive Voice Construction
Is there any difference in meaning between the three sentences below? Are all three grammatically correct?
• El edificio fue construido en 1949. • El edificio estuvo construido en 1949. • El edificio se construyó en 1949. Many thanks in advance. |
The passive voice isn't used in Spanish as much as it is in English, but when it is used, 'ser' is the only verb that can be used in the construct.
Your first sentence is the only sentence written in the 'voz pasiva'. Your last sentence is an example of the 'voz pasiva refleja', which is commonly used in Spanish. Its translation into English would be the same translation used for the first sentence (the English passive voice would be used in both instances). Your middle sentence wouldn't be used to express the same idea as the first and third sentences. |
I agree with Rusty.
"Estar" is never a verb used for passive voice. "Estuvo construido" would need more context and it would mean that the building was (finally) finished in 1949. |
Many thanks, guys. I wasn't sure about the middle one either.
