I need to tell my employee (from Mexico) that he need not ever to lie to me! How should I say this tactfully? Sandy:thinking:

Nunca tiene que mentir. -or- No hay que mentir.
Siempre puede decirme la verdad.

There are many ways to say the same thing.

Those are great. I just don't want to offend him. He isn't lying to me, just very defensive. I want him to always feel that he can tell me the truth. Which is the best sentence for that? Sandy

It would be OK to say any of the following:
Quiero que se sienta que siempre puede decirme la verdad.
= I want you to feel that you can always tell me the truth.
Siéntase cómodo de decirme la verdad.
= Feel free to tell me the truth.

I would say something like this: (written in the tú form instead of usted. Tú is commonly used by an employer to an employee). If the employee is older than you, you might want to change it to usted.

Quiero que tengas la confianza para siempre decireme la verdad. Yo preferiría que me digas la verdad aunque no me agrade, a que inventes cualquier otra cosa.

I want you to always be comfortable telling me the truth. I'd rather you told me the truth even if it's something I don't want to hear, instead of just making something up.

Quiero que exista entre nosotros la confianza suficiente para poder hablar sin problemas. Es preferible que me digas la verdad a que me digas lo que yo quiero oir.
