It didn't answer
p.226
-I married one of the locals out here. It didn't answer. She went back to her people. I've not seen her for half a dozen years." What do the red words mean? ANSWER could have the meaning of agreeing or meeting or fitting, but what would IT refer to? There's nothing explicit shown in the paragraph. |
I married ... The marriage didn't work out. She went back to her people.
|
By WORK OUT, do you mean she was not/did not turn out to be as a good wife as I thought she'd be?
|
Not being as good a wife as the speaker thought she'd be would be my last stab at why she left.
We aren't told why she left, but a feeling of inadequacy on her part could be a valid reason. She may have regretted leaving her culture/family or she may have had second thoughts about being married. |
Rusty's assumptions seem right, but you should know that "it didn't answer" is a strange choice of words not commonly heard or understood in this context.
