Out of sight
p.397
-We need to keep out of sight of Hagrid's front door [...] Do you think this is ambiguous? 1. We must not see Hagrid's front door. 2. Anyone standing at the front door must not see us. |
The original sentence means that the kids don't want to be seen by anyone standing at Hagrid's front door.
The first sentence you provided doesn't have the same meaning as the original. The kids may be turned so that they can't see Hagrid's front door, but that orientation may not keep them from being seen by someone standing at Hagrid's front door. Keeping 'out of sight' of something means that persons at the location mentioned cannot see you. The second sentence you wrote has the same meaning as the original, but doesn't mention whose front door. |
Good answer. Thank you.
