The set phrase in English is 'the lesser of two evils'. The Spanish equivalent is el mal menor.

There is no lesser of two evils.
= No hay mal menor.

Ok, no hay mal menor is fine...but

How about 'no hay mal que por bien no venga'

I know the meaning is kinda displaced, but some Spanish idioms are more positive in form than the English ones.

I don't understand this. what two evils?

Rusty October 19, 2008 03:39 PM

We're talking about a set phrase (idiomatic expression). Planet hopper's post adds another idiomatic expression (this time in Spanish) to the mix. The translation frequently given for the Spanish expression he posted is 'every cloud has a silver lining.'

Rusty,

I've been wondering on this one for the last 24 hours and everything I get is:

-el mal menor

-la mejor opcion

I'd say we don't have an expression as long as the English one, in Spanish it is more of a phrase. I am sorry, I can't approach Spanish systematically, maybe because I've never taught it before.

You're right about the clouds with silver lining...That's a very cool one :)

Jessica October 20, 2008 05:55 AM

oh, okay. Now I got it.

Gracias de todos
