-able suffix

-able suffix

So I was wondering what in Spanish is the equivalent of the English suffix -able (as in usable or doable) is, but every time I look it up, Poder keeps showing up, I know that poder is can/could/to be able, but what is the -able suffix in Spanish? Or is it just the infinitive with Poder?

In Spanish we have suffixes "-able" (for verbs ended in "-ar") and "-ible" (for verbs ended in "-er"/"-ir"):

-lavable (something that can be washed)
-usable (something that can be used)
-entendible (something that can be understood)
-elegible (something that can be elected)

Sometimes speakers don't find "elegant" or acceptable the use of some verbs with the suffix, so they either change the verb (for a closer variation to its etymology) or use a phrase to express the same idea:

-audible (instead of "oíble") -> something that can be heard
-mensurable (instead of "medible") -> something that can be measured
-comestible (instead of "comible") -> something that can be eaten
-legible (instead of "leíble") -> something that can be read

· something doable -> algo que se puede hacer (here's where the verb "poder" is used.)
. something forgettable -> algo que se puede recordar olvidar
· something sizeable -> algo a lo que se le puede cambiar el tamaño
· something available -> algo que está disponible. ;)

De acuerdo con Angélica...,

Solo un pequeño lapsus:

"forgettable" no es algo que se puede "recordar", sino "olvidar"...

Pero "unforgettable" = inolvidABLE... ;-)

"Doable" puede ser también "factIBLE" (more "elegant" or even more "highbrow")

"Sizeable", podría ser también "de tamaño considerABLE"...

El DRAE también da:

-ble Del lat. -bĭlis.

1. suf. Forma adjetivos casi siempre deverbales. Indica posibilidad pasiva, es decir, capacidad o aptitud para recibir la acción del verbo. Si el verbo es de la primera conjugación, el sufijo toma la forma -able. Prorrogable. Si es de la segunda o tercera, toma la forma -ible. Reconocible, distinguible. Los derivados de verbos intransitivos o de sustantivos suelen tener valor activo. Agradable, servible.

De nada, como decía el dicho latino: "Aliquando bonus dormitat Homerus"... ;-)
