+ signs

I've noticed that some people have + signs next to their names. I know this isn't important but I'm interested and confused to know why they are there, and why some people, like mine, don't have them.

The plus signs designate your friends (those you've befriended). You won't see one by your own name.

You can't see a plus-sign by yourself, but others may see it.
It depends on whether or not you've made friends. Like I can see in your profile that you have a friendship with poli, and many others as well. Because you are friends with poli, and the other way around, poli sees a plus-sign at you, while you see a plus-sign at him.
