Use of pronouns (direct and indirect)
 

Hi all

I am new to the forum and new to learning a language. I’ve been studying Spanish for a few months and thought I understood the use of direct and indirect pronouns - but it seems I don’t and I don’t fully understand why. Probably best to explain with an example.

Yo compré el pan. ( I bought the bread)
Lo compré ayer. (I bought it yesterday)
Lo compré con queso (I bought it with cheese)

I am told by my teacher all the above are correct. However, if instead of the last sentence I wanted to say “it had cheese” - “it” being the sandwich. I want to write:
Lo tenía queso - I am told this is wrong but not why - other than it just is and I don’t need the “lo”. Can anyone explain why? Thanks in advance.

The pronoun 'lo' is a direct object pronoun. It can't be used as a subject pronoun. The English subject pronoun 'it' doesn't have a Spanish equivalent. Once established, you can simply omit the subject in Spanish where the English translation needs the subject pronoun 'it.'
