Luz

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for November 20, 2008

luz - feminine noun (la) - light. Look up luz in the dictionary

Si no fuera por la luz del sol, la tierra estaría tan fría que no la podríamos habitar.
If it weren't for the sun's light, the earth would be so cold it would be uninhabitable.

Jessica November 20, 2008 05:24 AM

yeah that's right.
The ozone layer has holes in it though, so harmful rays are coming in. Also, Earth is warming up quickly. We have to stop it!!!!!!!!
Without light Earth would be dark..! >.<

A dam (St. Lawrence Dam) across the Bering Straight has been proposed to help stop global warming. Do you think that would be a good idea (if it's even possible)?

Rusty November 20, 2008 11:45 AM

There are a lot of different ideas out there. Who knows what to believe?

Some say global warming must be stopped and offer a myriad of proposed solutions. Others say we are powerless to stop it, and foolish to attempt it. Others say there is no global warming and are disgusted with the people who are getting rich by promoting such ideas.
Still others say, "Live with it."

I won't comment further, except to say that I saw a T-shirt slogan the other day that pretty much says it all.

Stop Global Whining!

Jessica November 20, 2008 01:49 PM

How would a DAM be able to stop global warming???

CrOtALiTo November 20, 2008 02:25 PM

Yeah, it's would be a good idea, because the world our earth is suffering a lot nowadays, because we are finish with the planet, and it's not just. I think that even we have the opportunity of stop the warming global, it just the moment, we haven't to stop of fight with the people for that does not make more contamination in our gobbet of earth where we are living now.

If I had to translate that into Spanish, I'd try this. ¿Se entendería? :D
¡Deten Quejamiento Global!

Rusty November 20, 2008 03:22 PM

Deten el Quejamiento Global me suena mejor. Coincide con
Deten el Calentamiento Global. :)

Sabes que el quejido o la queja se usa en vez del quejamiento. ¿No?

Tomisimo November 20, 2008 08:57 PM

Sí. :) Inventé "quejamiento" para que se pareciera a "calentamiento". Y siempre es un problema recurrente para mí el olvidar el artículo. :(

Back onto topic? Luz has started being used as a name for a girl, the most famous being the 80s singer Luz Casal.

:)

Tomisimo November 21, 2008 04:18 PM

I once knew a girl named "Luz divina".

CrOtALiTo November 21, 2008 06:33 PM

I didn't know that.

Jessica November 21, 2008 06:48 PM

Does her name mean "Divine Light"?

Planet hopper November 21, 2008 10:45 PM

I just thought this one, about the word luz...
You guys may know about the short novel 'Heart of Darkness' by Joseph Conrad. It was the plot of Apocalypse now, the war movie with Brando.
Well, when the novel ends, the final exclamation, 'The Horror, the horror, the horror'

:twocents:Best Translation would be 'La luz, la luz'
Si dices puedo ver la luz, quiere decir: Finalmente, lo entendi
