This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for December 4, 2008

gota - feminine noun (la) - drop. Look up gota in the dictionary

Después de ponerme las gotas en los ojos, se me calmó el dolor.
After taking my eye drops, the pain subsided.

what would be the word for drop as in the verb? Like this:
I dropped the bowl onto the floor, but fortunately, it did not break.

Se me cayo el plato hondo y dichosamente no se rompió.

A more techincal word for drops (as in eyedrops) is colirio.

so the verb drop is cayo? okay

Caer it the infinitive form of the third person singular past tense cayo.
It means to fall. In Spanish you would commonly say "it fell from me" rather than "I dropped'. I think you can also say tumbé el plato hondo.which is a more direct translation of I dropped the bowl.

The most common way to say that you dropped something by accident is to use the caérsele algo structure. This was alluded to by poli. He conjugated it for you, but forgot an accent.

You never accidentally drop something in Spanish, it fell from you. :)

se me cayó el plato
se te cayó el plato
se le cayó el plato
etc.

se me cayeron los platos
etc.

To say that you are deliberately dropping something, you use dejar caer or tirar.

Drop, gotas, caer.

Dropped, Tumbar.

I'm well or bad?

CrOtALiTo December 04, 2008 08:53 AM

I dropped my shoes to the garbage can.

... in the garbage can.

To drop as a verb can have several translations:

caerse: It dropped on the floor. = Se cayó al piso.
caersele a alguien: I dropped the vase on the sidewalk. = Se me cayó el florero a la banqueta.
soltar/dejar caer: I dropped the ball in the hole. = Solté/deje caer la pelota en el hoyo.

Then of course, there are many other verbs using "drop" as well-- to drop by, to drop in, to drop out, etc.
