Numbers Rules

Numbers Rules

There are actually number rules. Can someone who knows these rules (I have my own sheet of rules but they are confusing) check these?

Is their new address 4 Robertson Road or 1218 Corridon Park?

Twenty-five students applied for the internship at the bank.

The tallest girl in the senior class, Gail, was 5 ft. 11 in.

Three of the 9 days will be spent in Seattle, Washington.

The memo dated March 6, 1986, included 2 of the estimates.

The duplicated materials should be ready in about five days.

Only 1/3 of the members attended the previous meeting.

The interest rate was changed from 10 ¾ to 11 ½%.

There are 2 flights, one at 9:30 a.m., and one at 2:48 p.m.

The new house they bought will be ready in one or two weeks.

Tell me if you want to know all the rules for numbers.

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules, in other words, the experts don't really agree. That being said, the following is generally true, although since there really isn't consensus, some of these "rules" are contradictory.
  • Spell out whole numbers smaller than ten. "five" instead of "5".
  • Spell out numbers at the beginning of a sentence, or rearrange the sentence so it doesn't start with a number.
  • Spell out any number that is one word. "fourty" not "40".
  • Be consistent within the same sentence. "She has 5 apples and 15 oranges" or "She has five apples and fifteen oranges".
