Nochebuena

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for December 6, 2008

nochebuena - feminine noun (la) - poinsettia. Look up nochebuena in the dictionary

Quiero comprar una nochebuena porque ya casi llega la Navidad.
I want to buy a poinsettia because it's almost Christmas.

sosia December 06, 2008 04:47 AM

Nochebuena it's "Christmas Eve".
In Spain, the poinsettia it's called "Flor de pascua", in France is "Étoile d'amour" and I thought in Mexico was "Flor de Nochebuena"
saludos :D

Tomisimo December 06, 2008 09:49 AM

In Mexico, Nochebuena means Christmas Eve and poinsettia. There are a few different words for it in English too, such as the Star of Christmas.

Jessica December 06, 2008 10:08 AM

I've never heard of the word poinsettia. I know it's a decoration, though. So this English word must be new to me

Jessica December 07, 2008 01:00 PM

it's a little too early for Christmas....and new year's.
Does noche mean night?

FabiArgentina December 07, 2008 02:19 PM

In Argentina that flower is named "Estrella federal" and is typical to see them by Christmas season
Nochebuena is the night between December 24th and 25th
We here wait until midnight and cheers and exchange present at tha time (we also throw "cañitas voladoras", "bengalas" and "rompeportones", all of them are fireworks)

No, Christmas eve is at December 25th, I know that is a bit early for Christmas eve, but I wanted to say that, on my house, there is a flower of poinsettia, and really the flower is very red and beautiful.

lee ying December 07, 2008 04:02 PM

yes jessica: night mean noche,in the morning mean en el dia (en la mañana) that mean early. but you can say day mean dia for example mother´s day : dia de la madre. do you understand me:?

Jessica December 07, 2008 04:11 PM

yes I understand you lee ying....I knew that night is noche, tarde is afternoon, and morning can be el día or mañana (which also means tomorrow).

:confused::confused:
I'm confused! Look at the calendar..... Christmas eve is on Dec. 24th and Christmas on the 25th...unless I'm mistaken and you're right, Crotalito, I'm SURE that Christmas eve is Dec. 24th, not the 25th.

lee ying December 07, 2008 04:18 PM
