Fuego

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for December 8, 2008

fuego - masculine noun (el) - fire. Look up fuego in the dictionary

Abrieron fuego en cuanto los soldados aparecieron.
They opened fire as soon as the soldiers appeared.

can this also be used for the fire as in forest fire? or how about They fired at them? The boss fired them for no reason? what would be used for those?

The English word fire is used in a lot of ways, so you should expect to see other Spanish words.

You should use incendio to describe a large, destructive fire. This includes building and house fires.

When something is on fire, it's en llamas or it's ardiendo.

To fire at is disparar.

The fire that burns in your hearth, or in your heart (passion), is fuego. A larger fire, like a bonfire, is hoguera. A fireside is hogar.

If you perform poorly at work, your boss will despedirte or echarte.

If you're fired up, you're animado.
