Popping Popcorn
 
Yesterday we did a lab on popping popcorn! it was so fun watching the corn pop!
I remember when we ate popcorn and we popped it in the microwave we can't see them pop, because it is in a bag and a microwave. But now, I could see it pop, and how it pops!

1. Is the popping of corn a physical or chemical change? Chemical Change
Explain: sizzling and temperature change says that it is a chemical change

2. Corn falls into which category of organic compounds? carbohydrates
What would be its monomers? glucose, fructose, galactose

3. Vegetable oil falls into which category of organic compounds? lipids
What would be its monomers? fatty acids and glycerol

4. Vegetable oil is a lipid with many double bonds in its hydrocarbon chains of fatty acids. Therefore, vegetable oil is what type of fat? polyunsaturated

5. Of the two, oil or corn, which supplies the greatest percentage of Calories when eaten? oil
*Oil calories: 32.85 c/g
*popcorn: 32.48 c/g

Popping popcorn is not a chemical change. The process is very physical. All the constituents are still intact. Nothing changed to another substance.
