Colección de 'novela' vs 'novelas'

Colección de 'novela' vs 'novelas'
 
La editorial va a sacar una nueva colección de novela.
La editorial va a sacar una nueva colección de novelas.

I think the first one is grammatically incorrect, but I have seen expressions like this one several times. I must assume the 'collection' contains more than one.

Any help would be appreciated.

The first one may refer to the genre and the other to the number of novels to be issued, but yes, "colección de novelas" sounds much better. ;)
