To have/to be having

Is there a difference in meaning in the sentences below?

He was supposed to have a meeting with the boss.
He was supposed to be having a meeting with the boss.

There is a subtle difference, but they can mean the same thing.
The latter can convey the idea of 'right now', or at least (soon) today.
