enfermarse - verb - to get sick. Look up enfermarse in the dictionary

Me enfermé y estuve en cama por cinco días.
I got sick and was bedridden for five days.

Would a literal translation of this not actually be, I made myself sick and...?

You're right, elDanés, but it is used so in some plsces.
for "I got sick and was bedridden for five days." I usually say "Me puse enfermo y estuve en cama 5 días"
