What does the "se las" mean in this paragraph?

What does the "se las" mean in this paragraph?
 

In this passage, Nina is recounting events to a boy and girl, and the phrase "Nina les contó cómo se las habían ingeniado para encontrar el camarote" seems to make perfect sense to me without the "se las". I can't figure out what the "se las" is doing here.


"Mientras caminaban hacia el salón donde iba a celebrarse el cóctel, Nina les contó cómo se las habían ingeniado para encontrar el camarote, desde la ropa que estropearon hasta cómo cruzaron el salón sin que se percatasen los camareros, mientras que de lo sucedido en el camarote antes de que llegaran ellos, no añadió nada nuevo, salvo que Pascal las había defendido ante el matrimonio. La conversación siguió hasta que Marta y Ana se adelantaron un par de pasos y Ferrán y Nina disfrutaron de una breve intimidad."

The verb ingeniar, the expression ingeniárselas, and the expression ingeniárselas para mean different things: they are not interchangeable.

ingeniar = invent, devise, think up, come up with
ingeniárselas = work it out, figure it out
ingeniárselas para = contrive to, manage to, find a way to (do something)
