Estar o ser embarasada

I always assumed that in Spanish you would use estar in this case, but I heard ser used. Are both usages correct?

Estar embarazada = being pregnant

Ser embarazada = to be impregnated / to become pregnant / (there's a crude term I don't remember, being knocked something or so)

Thanks. By the way, the termed knocked up is the rude term in American English, but may have a different meaning in UK.

I was thinking that as embarazada is both noun and participio, it may be some confusion

Estar embarazada es difícil
Ser una embarazada es difícil

Or maybe you remembered something in Italian, as

estoy embarazada= sono incinta

By the way, using "estar encinta" is more elegant than saying "estar embarazada".

I was surprised when I learned pregnant is the word used in English, as preñadas are the non-human animals.

Is ser embarazada crude, or not necessarily, after all?

aleCcowaN October 14, 2024 05:21 AM

Ser embarazada refers to the act of becoming pregnant, like ser preñada or ser fecundada do, so I consider it not to be definitively crude but inelegant.

Estar embarazada is OK, though estar encinta or even estar en la dulce espera are better, like English having people passing rather than dying.
