"Son" lo peor ...
People,
I just saw on RTVE, written in the news legend: "Son lo peor de Eapaña". Wouldn't it be better to say "Son los peores de Eapaña"? I still have a bit of trouble with grouping various things or people into a collective singular. The legend said "son", then the collective singular "lo". -------------------------- I also saw "estrategia del victimismo". The word victim doesn't sound very masculine to me. But I am thinking that the "ismo" suffix only exists in the masculine, and that the suffix "ista" requires the feminine. Is that it? Thanks in advance. Dean |
Isn't "they are the worst thing that happened to the country" a correct sentence? It includes plural subject "they" and singular "thing".
All words ending with "ismo" are masculine: extremismo, tremendismo, pasatismo, etc. On the contrary, the ending -ista is invariable: la tenista, el tenista la deportista, el deportista la artista, el artista with the only exception of "el modisto", because calling a man identified fashion designer "el modista" would have been considered offensive, as they are so darn macho as a general rule. Today it is used "diseñador de moda/s" or "diseñador de indumentaria", so the term modisto only remains to spoil the dictionary. |
aleCcowaN,
Ah yes, you have explained it all very well. Thanks. Summer is coming up, so I wish you a nice summer! Silopanna/Dean |
