the periphrastic IR vs. the independent IR
Re. the previous post,
I am confused about how to differentiate between the periphrastic IR and the non-periphrastic/independent IR: Would you check if I have marked the examples correctly: The non-periphrastic / independent IR: to go to a place; to walk (engage locomotion) to get to a place / someone) The periphrastic IR: expresses intentionality/ future action expresses logic consequence/ negation Can you go and ask your brother if he wants to have supper? 2. [independent IR? – go mentally to a desired condition] Don't forget to brush your teeth before you go to bed / you go to sleep / falling asleep/ you fall asleep. 3. [independent IR? – go physically to bed / go mentally to a desired condition]. I like to read for a while before I go to bed. (I read at my desk, then go to bed) I like to read for a while before I fall asleep (I lie down and then read until I’m asleep) 4. [independent IR? ] I wonder where we'll end up under this new government. 5. [independent IR?] I don't get how they wound up at that frightful hotel. 6. [independentIR?] The coach came off the road and ended up in a lake. 7. [independent IR?] We were out walking when we came across a beautiful square. 8. Me gusta ir a pescar solo. Me relaja. [independent IR?] I like to go fishing alone. It's relaxing. 9. ¿Qué voy a pensar si llevas tres días fuera de casa? [periphrastic IR] logic consequence What do you expect me to think if you don't come home for three days? 10.¿No irás a salir así a la calle? [periphrastic IR] intention Surely you're not going to go out like that? 11.¿Te ha gustado? - ¡Qué me va a gustar! [periphrastic IR] negation Did you like it? - Like it? You must be joking! Thank you. |
1, 2, 3, 8 and 11 are clearly independient. 6 and 7 are clearly periphrastic uses as there's a progresión of events. 4 is a non periphrastic use with future to express conjecture ( try with "dónde terminaremos/acabaremos..."), and 9 is similar ( try with "qué otra conclusión voy a sacar...", "qué otra cosa puedo pensar..."). 5 and 10 look like unnecessary periphrastic uses, yet valid ones. "¿Cómo terminaron en ese hotel?" and "¡No pensarás salir así!" say the same without the progression.
