Estoy usando este foro para unas semanas ahora, pero no me presenté todavía. Me llama Lou Ann. Soy de Buffalo, New York (donde nieva mucho). :D Vivo en los suburbios de Washington, DC hace doce años. Soy una maestra de matemáticas y álgebra.

Estudié español en la universidad hace veinte años. ¡Pero olvidé todo! El año pasado ayudé una organización local plan una conferencia internacional. En la conferencia encontré a varias personas que tienen desde amigas cercanos convertidos. Una viva en Uruguay. Una otra es de Lima, Peru, pero viva en Nueva York hace tres años. Quisieran que se ofreciera voluntariamente para trabajar en una conferencia en la Ciudad de México en mayo. Pero necesito aprender hablar español mejor antes de que vaya.

Ahora utilizando una programa informático popular para aprender hablar español. Pero siempre tengo preguntas. Me gusta Tomísimo porque puedo hacer muchas, muchas preguntas, incluso preguntas básicas, y consigo respuestas maravillosas. :applause:

Utilicé Yahoo Babelfish para la ayuda con alguno que traduce este poste, y para algunas de mis preguntas hechas en los foros. Pronto espero que pueda escribir sin el uso de Babelfish.

Ahora necesito la mayoría de la ayuda con la construcción de la oración y tiempos del verbo. Aprecio todas las sugerencias.

Thanks, Jessica. I really used the translator (Babelfish) a LOT! I couldn't have written much of it without. BUT - I made sure to understand EVERY single word I wrote and exactly how each sentence is structured. It took me ALL afternoon to write. But I learned a lot. And that's the goal, right? :) Also remember that I'm only studying ONE subject. You've got what, seven? I can focus my attention more than you.

Lou Ann, would you appreciate help with your massive undertaking (your introduction)? There are things I could suggest to make it better. ;)
I can try to explain why I changed things as I go, if you'd like the extra effort.

My Spanish isn't perfect, but I believe the changes I made express what you intended to say. Machine translations are pretty bad and shouldn't be trusted. In future posts, try creating your own sentences from scratch. This will prove to be the best teacher. ;)

Rather than anticipate your questions about the changes I made, go ahead and ask the questions you might have. I'll try my best to explain.

RUSTY! Thank you SO much!! This is very helpful. It's difficult for me to write much without needing to look some word up in a dictionary. I don't have the vocabulary (it's coming ... but slowly!). And I can only conjugate verbs in the present tense right now. I have difficulty with sentence structure (as you can see). BUT, having said all of that, it is encouraging that I understand *most* of your changes.

I don't have time right now to enumerate all of my questions, but I'll start with one and will come back later with more. Please tell me about the difference between "maestra" and "profesora". Is "maestra" not used commonly for "teacher"? Is it possibly a Latin American vs. Spain thing? (I am mostly interested in Latin American Spanish.)

Profesora is used for teachers of older students. If you teach in an elementary school, you could call yourself una maestra.

OH! So even though I'm teaching 14-year-olds, they're considered "older"? Great to know! Especially for parent conference time! :)

I would think you would be a profesora. 14-year-olds are considered "older" (because I am one)

As I said you before, tonight I had time for you, and I hope my hints being of your use while you can understand my corrections, if you need or you don't understand my corrections above this post, please you ask me the question although, I feel that my corrections are very easy to understand, then I don't believe, you have much problems in understand them.

Okay, I am going to ask my questions a few at a time. It's the only way I will be able to process the answers. :)

I'll start with looking at Rusty's version of my introduction.

- I have done some reading on "hace ... [tiempo] ... que", including a link that I found that you posted in a different thread, and I think that I'm good with that construction. One quick question, though. If the verb that follows "que" is present tense, then it indicates something that has been ongoing? Like "Hace unas semanas que uso este foro..." where "uso" is present tense, so my use of the forum has been ongoing for several weeks. Right? But later in that same first paragraph, it says "Hace veinte años que estudié español...", the verb estudié is past tense, therefore this is something that happened twenty years ago and is NOT ongoing. Right?

- In the first sentence, I wrote "pero no me presenté todavía" and you changed it to "pero todavía no me he presentado". I have two questions about that construction. First - is the "todavía" always at the beginning of the phrase where it's used? Second - what does the "he" signify? Is it "here"? Or is it a conjugated verb that goes with the "presentar" (does it mean something like "have")? If so, what is the infinitive of that verb? And is the infinitive of "presentado" actually "presentarse"? AND ... is it similar in use to what you said a couple sentences later when you change what I wrote to "pero se me ha olvidado todo".

- Finally (for now), in that last sentence to which I just referred ("pero se me ha ovidado todo"), why is there both a "se" and a "me"? Is that a unique thing with "ovidar"?
