Enfermizo

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for April 3, 2009

enfermizo (adjective) — sickly, unhealthy, weak, infirm, morbid. Look up enfermizo in the dictionary

El niño es muy enfermizo, siempre padece algún mal.
The boy is very sickly, he's always suffering from some ailment.

what's the difference between sick and sickly? Can I say The boy is very sick... ?

Ambarina April 03, 2009 05:45 AM

The difference is: a person who is "sickly" gets ill very easily, constantly. Someone who is prone to becoming ill.
e.g. She was a sickly child and missed out a lot on her schooling. i.e. she was constantly getting ill and missed school a lot.

Someone who is sick, is ill but it's not a regular state to be in for that person.
e.g. Johnny came down with the flu and was sick all last week. I ate something that disagreed with me and I was sick.

Hope that helps :)

Does that same distinction carry over to enfermo/enfermizo?

You could say:
You're ill.
Illness is a noun. Ill is the adjective.

I don't know why but I am a sickly person.
