I am reading a story and need help with the following.
Nofue sino hasta que al circular por la carretera libre Tijuana–Tecate, a la altura del Paseo Los Laureles, que los sujetos perseguidos abrieron fuego contra la unidad 3662, hiriendo a dos de los tres ocupantes de la patrulla. The text in red is giving me the most trouble. I think los sujetos perseguidos means the chase suspects? Thank you Damon the story in full - http://www.frontera.info/EdicionDigi.../GENERAL_2.pdf |

My attempt: It wasn't until the exit ramp of the Tijuana-Tecate freeway, where it meets/joins Paseo de los Laureles, that the pursued suspects opened fire on unit 3662, wounding two of the three patrol officers. |
Rusty's translation is perfect. Here's a literal translation, which may help you understand the Spanish better.
No fue sino hasta que I wasn't until al circular por la carretera libre upon circulating/driving down the highway ("carretera libre" = non-toll road) Tijuana–Tecate, (Tijuana-Tecate is the name of the highway) a la altura del Paseo Los Laureles, [at the hight of / level with / near] Paseo Los Laureles que los sujetos perseguidos that the pursued subjects/guys abrieron fuego contra opened fire against la unidad 3662, hiriendo a unit 3662, wounding dos de los tres ocupantes de la patrulla. two of the three occupants of the patrol car. |
Wow! Thank you so much. This is such a great forum!
Just one more question in the first line - No fue sino hasta que I wasn't until Is the word sino needed? |

You text is almost correct in itself structure but, there are some mistakes very diminutives for example you can say a ala for refer about a place or some address where you wanna going or you are, then it's correct use but sound bad although the word exist between the people with tongue Spanish, I can recommend you that if you have the chance to use (Por la. Instead of a la it'll sounds much better than before.:) |
