This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for May 4, 2009

sacapuntas (masculine noun (el)) — pencil sharpener. Look up sacapuntas in the dictionary

Si quieres usar lápiz, te va a hacer falta un sacapuntas también.
If you want to use a pencil, you're going to need a pencil sharpener too.

De ahí viene la expresión "sacar la punta a algo", utilizar algo o aprovecharse de algo con fines maliciosos.

Siempre saca punta a todo lo que digo = siempre malinterpreta todo lo que digo (está pendiente de lo que digo para sacar conclusiones equivocadas).

También he visto como sinónimo de sacapuntas: tajalápiz, y coloquialmente, llamarle un taja.

En Chile llamamos a las personas así, "puntudo" o "aguja" :D

En España también se usa la palabra "afilalápices" para designar el mismo instrumento.

@chileno: En España a gente así la llamamos de otra manera que tiene algo que ver con las flores antes de que se desarrollen del todo ;)

I'd like buy a pencil sharpener for my kid, because as today is the children's day, he wants to has a pencil sharpener for using it in his school.

this was one of our vocabulary words, and Sra. told us that in the singular form its sacapuntas, same as the plural form.

like paperclips, sujetapapeles

Sharpener meaning Sacaputas.

Then it's right.
