Sobar
This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for May 10, 2009
sobar (verb) — to rub, massage. Look up sobar in the dictionary Sóbame el hombro, me duele mucho. Rub my shoulder, it hurts a lot. |
Sobar falls into the world of slang and can mean other things in various countries. ¡Ojo!
I would think frotar is generally accepted as to rub and masajear is the more precise (or more technical) word for to massage. :twocents: |

In spain the meaning of "sobar" is something like "to touch somebody without permission with sexual intention" Mi hermana llegó a casa muy enfadada porque un tipo la sobó en el metro. Es despreciable que un médico aproveche un chequeo para sobar a sus pacientes. Sóbame is a verbal form that I think is not very used, so sobar has the meaning of unagreement of the touched person. Masajear will work better as to massage. Frotar o dar friegas, también :) |
As Bolboreta said, "sobar" is a bit coarse word in Spain. It's used also meaning "sleep" and "handled" in slang:
Estaba sobando cuando me llamó por teléfono. No compres ese libro de segunda mano, está muy sobado. |
