Homenaje: músicos desaparecidos prematuramente

Many musicians have died prematurely. I'd like to pay tribute to them. Thanks to technology nowadays we're able to see them and listen to them:

Do you know someone else?

Keith Moon de "The Who" (me gusta su música, (medicine overdose)

Israel "iz" Kamakawiwo'ole (su mejor canción es "what a wonderful world")

What is "iz"?

Yes, there are a lot of artists who take drugs, it's a pity because their art is lost when they die. However, there are another that have died because of car or plane accidents. They have to travel a lot, so they are quite exposed to accidents.

(we call it "nickname" (usualmente es más corto)

We use the word "nickname" for forums: mi nick (o nickname) es irmamar :)

With names we use "diminutivos", sometimes "diminutivos" make a name shorter and other times make it longer :D

José - diminutivo: Pepe; otro diminutivo: Pepito
Agustín - diminutivo: Agus, otro diminutivo: Agustinito (this one is not very common, the others they're very common ones)
Dolores - diminutivo: Lola; otro diminutivo: Lolita
Francisco - diminutivo: Paco; otro: Paquito (women called Francisca used to be called "Paquita", not "Paca")

"diminutivo" as irmamar says, is for making it short
"apodo" is when the person has another name but it's called is called so: Sting, Prince,..

I've looked it up at a dictionary and it says "diminutive"

As Sosía said, it is to make short a name, but sometimes a diminutive makes a name longer :D

A few corrections ;)

What a pity!

AngelicaDeAlquezar June 15, 2009 05:44 PM

Sí, ¿querrías escuchar una buenísima canción? Escucha a la canción "over the mountain", dentro de la cual Randy "shreds" o "toca la guitarra como un santo;)"

I didn't know Rany or Randy Rhoads, so I didn't know if he was a man or a woman

AngelicaDeAlquezar June 16, 2009 09:47 AM

@irmamar: I thought so, not everyone has to know all musicians. ;)

@Bob: Gracias por la recomendación. Voy a buscar Over the Mountain.
I knew about Randy Rhoads rather because of Quiet Riot. I saw he also worked for Ozzy Osbourne until I read your post. :D

... Haendel... :)

Do you say in English that someone plays or sings like a saint?

Are you sure he plays the guitar as a saint  ?:D

poli June 16, 2009 12:26 PM

Just as in Spanish the correct word is angel not saint.

AngelicaDeAlquezar June 16, 2009 12:52 PM

Despite what Bob will say about it, I think he was rather playing with the name of the band and the lyrics of the song. :)

bobjenkins June 16, 2009 05:56 PM

Hola ;) Tenemos un modismo en inglés "to shred the guitar".

Me confunde
