Auxiliar

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 17, 2009

auxiliar (verb) — to help, assist, bring aid to. Look up auxiliar in the dictionary

El coche no arranca; llama a tu papá para que nos auxilie.
The car won't start; call your dad so he can come help us.

More commonly you would hear the verb ayudar used instead of auxiliar. Is the 'x' pronounced like an 'x' of a 'j'? I think the 'x' is pronounced.

first aid= primer auxilio

Ayúdame and socorro are really good words to know. I think people may
be puzzled if you say auxíliame:hmm:

Sí creo que ayudar es mucho más común ;)

Yo las auxilié crecer a las plantas por (by) las dar mucha aqua. Ellas ma dan muchas flores. ;)

I agree with you both. "Ayudar" is more common than "auxiliar", though "auxiliar" is used above all when there is a sort of accident or someone is hurt or even lost, in the mountain or in the forest, for instance.

Auxilar is also an adjective:

Haber es un verbo auxiliar.

Or a noun:

Cuando vas en avión ya no puedes llamar a la azafata, sino al auxiliar de vuelo.

"X" in "auxiliar" is pronounced like "ks".

first aid= primer auxilio

In Mexico we know it as "primeros auxilios", in plural.

It depends on the situation, but people would actually scream "¡Auxilioooooo!" when they're faced to danger.

"Auxiliar", as irmamar has said, is rather to help in a situation of emergency, so in other cases, "ayudar" will be better.

It more commonly use the word Ayudar into of the Spanish, but is acceptable use the word auxiliar and sound better, for example if you ask help to anyone you can say.

Por favor auxilieme con mi carro creo que no enciende.

Please you help with my car because it won't start.

I hope you can understand this sentence.:)
