coger al vuelo (another meaning)
= to catch on the fly
= to catch in flight
(they don't use coger in some places on this side of the world)

entender una indirecta
= to get the hint
= to get the drift
= to catch the meaning
= to catch on

I'm not certain I understand the second meaning - una explicación a la primera. Could you use it in a couple of sentences para ver si lo pillo?

If I were just about to go somewhere (to leave) when you showed up, I might say: I'm on my way out.
I was just headed out.
I was just leaving/about to leave.
I was on the verge of leaving.
You caught me in mid-flight. (not too common)
