No dar pie con bolo

Este dicho significa no acertar una. En inglés sabe alguien el equivalente?

to botch up
to screw up(slightly vulgar)
to miss the mark (this last one means to misunderstand a concept/ or use bad judgement, but somehow I suspect that this term may fit as well)

Can you set an example for the 3 of them?
For example, cuando le pregunto no da pie con bolo.

He really botched up/screwed up the plumbing. Now, we get cold water when we want hot and hot water when we want cold.

You really missed the mark if you thought Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

OK thanks. NO dar pie con bolo en el contexto de la clase para significar, que no aciertan ninguna respuestas, como sería: Hit the target or something like that?
