Dar un paso en falso
 
Como se traduciría en inglés " dar un paso en falso" EJ.
ANtes de decicirme a que novio echarme, debo reflexionar no quiero dar un paso en falso, es como decir to make the wrong choice I guess.
Also used in murder context, the murderer no dió un paso en falso, the police will have difficulty in catching him.

"slip up" would work a least in the second case.

Well in the first case, if it is about a social situation in which you don't want to make a blunder, perhaps:

faux pas


Obviously not an English word in origen but French, however I think it' s used in England and America as well (at least I have heard it mentioned a couple of times on American tv as well :D If this is not the case, one of the native English speakers kindly rectify :))
