We also say meterse al público en el bolsillo . In English any equivalencies??

Yes you are right the English equivalent is: to win over. (win over the public win the public over.

I agree. Remember that público = audience, spectators, crowd, public. Public is not always the best translation.

Subtle differences...

audience = auditorio, público, audiencia
spectators = espectadores, público
crowd = público, muchedumbre, multitud, gentío, espectadores
public = público
