"... del monton" - "... run of the mill"

"... del monton" - "... run of the mill"

Is quite common to use this expression, is 'run of the mill' a good way to represent it?
Examples:

"Mi pueblo cambió mucho, ahora es uno más del monton [de pueblos]."
My town changed a lot, now it's a run of the mill town.
My town changed a lot, now it's an ordinary town.

"Es un libro del montón."
It's a run of the mill book.

I wouldn't say it's common, but it's not odd. También se puede decir "bog standard" o "nothing special":
It's a bog standard town.
This book isn't anything special.
It's a run of the mill book, nothing special.

Y para personas, por ejemplo:
-Lucía sale con un chico alto y delgado.
- Es guapo?
- No, bueno, es del montón.
Yo diría " Average"
can we use he is a bog standard boy. and he is a run of the mill boy.

pjt33 September 12, 2009 05:31 AM

No. Mejor decir, "He's nothing special."

ROBINDESBOIS September 12, 2009 05:43 AM

y con average? for example : he is average- looking

ookami September 12, 2009 07:06 AM

Or "he's an ordinary guy" ?

pjt33 September 12, 2009 07:19 AM

"Average" está bien. "Ordinary guy" me suena más a "No es superhéroe" o "No es famoso".

'Bog standard' must be a British term. I've never heard it before.
'Run of the mill' is used in the U.S. (I've used it hundreds of times).
We also use:

(your) average
It's your average town. (an average town)
He's average looking. (your average guy)

ordinary
It's just an ordinary town. (your ordinary town)
He's ordinary looking. (your ordinary guy)

unremarkable
I live in an unremarkable town.

(just) a (used for grouping something/someone into the same class as everything/everyone else)
It's a town.
He's a guy.

normal
It's a normal town.
He's normal looking.

inconsequence, of no consequence, inconsequential
It's a town of inconsequence. (town of no consequence / inconsequential town)

nothing to write home about, nothing to speak of, nothing special
My town is nothing to write home about.
His looks are nothing to speak of.

like everything/everyone else
Remember, you're unique, just like everyone else.
