Tan ______ como ________

Tan ______ como ________

I came across the following sentence:

Aquella cara me resultaba tan extrana como a este nuevo cuerpo le parecerian los tentaculos serpentinos.

I'm not sure why that "a" is there; could anyone provide an explanation & translation?

This is no doubt better explained by people with more knowledge and experience in Spanish. But my guess would be because there is a comparison between 'me' in the first sentence -being also indirect object I think- to 'este nuevo cuerpo' / le (presuming 'le' is there to stress the indirect object here, i.e. 'este nuevo cuerpo'.)

I think the translation might be.. ( ) something like:

"That face seemed just as strange to me as the serpentlike/snakelike tentacles would seem to this new body" ..

Really the letter A does not necessary to be set there in the sentence, you can use the sentence without the letter A in the same phrase, the letter A is used there as a complement in the phrase, therefore I can telling you that you do not need to use the letter A in thus phrase.

Sincerely yours.:)

I'm not in accord(?) with you Crotalito, the "a" is necesary.

Algunos verbos requieren una preposición. Por ejemplo, parecerse:

Este chico se parece a mi hermano.

En cambio, parecer no la requiere:

¿Te parece bien que haga los deberes ahora?

The a is necessary. The reason being is that the verb "parecer" requires it.

A mí me parece que ...
Le parece a mi tía que ...

Just like in English. You can't leave the to out of the following:

It seems to me that ...

I agree with Tomisimo.......the "a" is needed for this particular statement.

"That face seemed so strange to me as did this body with the snake-like tentacles"

The phrase is talking about two things that shared the same feeling......

My :twocents:

Please I can understand your commentary.

You give me a good example or at least you give me a explanation of the Why are you not agree with me?. In my commentary.

Three forum members have already explained why the preposition is necessary, Crotalito.
