How would you translate:

El hecho de que hubiera habido dinero de por medio no convertiría a Polanski en inocente, sino a la familia en cómplice.

The fact that there had been money (in the deal/family), it would not make Polanski innocent but the family became an accomplice.

That is what I thought, more or less, but the problem is that it still makes no sense to me.

What does de por medio mean exactly? :thinking:
