Atraso

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for October 22, 2009

atraso (masculine noun (el)) — slowness, delay, time lag, lateness. Look up atraso in the dictionary

Llegué con 40 minutos de atraso pero nadie me dijo nada.
I arrived 40 minutes late but nobody seemed to care.

laepelba October 24, 2009 01:06 PM

Is that the common usage for this term? With "de"? Or could I say something like: "Tu nota en la papel está baja debido a tu atraso." ???

CrOtALiTo October 24, 2009 01:06 PM

In the last phrase seemed to care.

What does it means?

I don't can match the phrase with the Spanish's one..

laepelba October 24, 2009 01:09 PM

Well, in English, "no one cares" means that maybe no one noticed, or no one said anything, but basically that it was not important to anyone that the person was 40 minutes late. It implies a bit of hurt feelings.

No parecía importarle a nadie.

@ Crotalito: llegué 40 minutos tarde, pero a nadie pareció importarle :)

I'd say "llegué con 40 minutos de retraso", but I think there is a thread about it

I'd say "atraso" in other contexts:

Esto es un atraso: nos han quitado las calculadoras y nos han dado lápiz y papel para hacer las cuentas  ;)

Thanks Irma - I LOVE your example. :)

Ya me imagino por qué ;) (estos teachers...) :D

laepelba October 24, 2009 01:21 PM

paper in this case is translated as "trabajo" so this would be

Tu nota en el trabajo está baja debido a tu atraso. :good:

Now to be on context and this might be funny to some and not to others. For the latter I apologize in advance.

Más asustada que monja con atraso

I will be waiting... :D

Help! That frightened nun with backwards?

irmamar October 25, 2009 12:49 AM

In this case, we also say "retraso":

Mi hermana cree que está embarazada, tiene un retraso de un mes (o tiene una falta)

Surely this sentence will answer your question about the nun, Lou Ann ;)

More frightened than a nun ... :D

laepelba October 25, 2009 01:22 PM

Nope, I still don't get it. I have so far to go................

pjt33 October 25, 2009 05:39 PM

More frightened than a nun whose period is late.

laepelba October 25, 2009 06:42 PM

No you're not. What happens is that I am so much of an irreverent. :o

But I guess I help all the same... :D
