Hola

Hello, I am new here. I am studying Spanish at our local community college. Last night we read about a '"universidade autónoma"". When I asked what "autónoma"" meant, I was given the job of Googling it. How would you define it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forums! I made a slight correction in your post.
I suppose you were given, or figured out, the English equivalent of the word. Autonomous means 'self-governing'. So, I would guess that the university in question is an independent entity, not requiring outside assistance to meet its needs and/or not having to answer to a higher authority, like the state or the government.

In Mexico, there seem to be quite a few "universidades autónomas" and I get the feeling that this means that in spite of receiving government funding, they are autonomous (independent) self-governing institutions (not run directly by the gov't).

Welcome, Tabbykat.

There are several "universidades autónomas" in Spain, too. I guess they took its name because the universitary self-government. Anyway, the public Universities here have self-government, although not all of them are called "autónomas". I don't know the reason  :)
